Unknown Facts About Rt 66

Historic Rt 66, which is also referred to as The Mother Road, Main Street of America and The Will Rogers Highway, was founded on November 11th, 1926.

This iconic highway quickly became a symbol of freedom and adventure for countless travelers, capturing the spirit of the open road.

Road signs for the new roadway were not erected until the following year, yet its allure had already begun to draw in those seeking exploration and a break from the ordinary.

Throughout America’s heartland, Rt 66 connected small towns and big cities alike, offering a unique glimpse into the diverse culture and history of the nation.

Over the decades, it evolved into a vital artery for commerce and tourism, representing not just a means of travel, but a cherished slice of Americana.

Route 66 was built primarily as a way for settlers in the 1930s to migrate west. This construction took place during the Dust Bowl, which was a series of devastating dust storms that negatively effected local businesses.

It was thought that Rt 66 would bring wayward travelers through their small towns and help revitalize these decimated businesses. It worked!

A Realignment of Route 66

In 1985, Rt 66 was officially removed from the United States Highway System. It was replaced by larger parts of the Interstate Highway System, which technically downgraded it to “Historic Rt 66“.

There are millions of folks who think this downgrade was the best thing since sliced bread—or maybe even since unsliced bread, who knows?

It turned the highway into a nostalgic joyride, where curious travelers can stumble upon quirky local businesses like that one that sells nothing but inflatable flamingos.

To this day, the legend of Rt 66 has ballooned in popularity, almost like those flamingos!
