The Origin of Mexican Jumping Beans

Contrary to popular belief, Mexican jumping beans are not beans at all but rather the seeds of a shrub known as Sebastiania pavoniana, native to the deserts of Mexico.

These seeds are inhabited by the larvae of a small moth species, Laspeyresia saltitans. The interaction between the plant, the moth, and the environment gives rise to the unique behavior that has captivated observers for centuries.

The Enigma of Movement

What sets Mexican jumping beans apart is their seemingly spontaneous movement. When exposed to heat or light, the larvae inside the beans become active, causing the beans to wriggle and jump.

This motion is a survival mechanism employed by the larvae to seek shelter and regulate their environment. As the larvae move within the bean, they can generate enough force to cause it to “jump,” sometimes several inches into the air

[…] Marvin Glass and Associates created a little known wonder in the mid 1960’s. A plastic box, a 25 watt lightbulb, a black sheet of paper, a peg board, and some brightly colored pegs made up this childhood dream. Lite Brite, released by Milton Bradley in 1967, is still topping Holiday lists today. The idea was simple yet genius and clearly way ahead of its time. A small light bulb lit up a black sheet of paper with a design on it which rested in front of a metal peg board. Children would place colorful pegs into the designs on the paper which would then go through the holes in the peg board and, Oiala! A Classic Vintage Toy! […]

As a child, I was always fascinated by those lil Mexican Jumping Beans jumping & hopping inside those lil clear plastic boxes making lil clicking/tapping sounds on the plastic lil boxes they were sold in when they jumped! They were for sale at the front cash register counter at our local Newberrys dime store. Even though I haven’t seen them for sale in many years, I’m still pretty fascinated by them! 😁
