In 1961, it became a public company under the name Volume Shoe Corporation, and later on, it merged with The May Department Stores Company in 1979.
In the 1980s, Payless became well-known in the United States for its affordable Pro Wings sneakers, which had Velcro straps instead of regular shoelaces.

Where it Began
Payless Shoes was founded in 1956 in Topeka, Kansas, USA. With a vision to provide affordable footwear options for families, they established the company with a commitment to offering quality shoes at reasonable prices.
Their initial store catered primarily to budget-conscious customers, offering a wide selection of shoes for men, women, and children.

Early Growth:
In the following decades, Payless Shoes rapidly expanded its reach across the United States, capitalizing on its reputation for affordability and accessibility.
By offering a diverse range of styles, sizes, and brands, Payless became a go-to destination for budget-friendly footwear shopping. The company’s strategic pricing model and emphasis on customer satisfaction propelled its growth, leading to the opening of numerous retail outlets nationwide.

Payless Shoes Global Expansion
As Payless Shoes continued to gain popularity domestically, it set its sights on international markets. Leveraging its successful business model, Payless ventured into various countries, bringing its affordable footwear options to new audiences worldwide.
With each expansion, the company adapted to local preferences while staying true to its core values of affordability and quality.

Brand Evolution
Over the years, Payless Shoes has undergone several transformations to stay relevant in an ever-changing retail landscape. From refreshing its store designs to revamping its product offerings, the brand has continuously innovated to meet the evolving needs of its customers.
Additionally, Payless has embraced digital channels, establishing an online presence to reach a broader audience and enhance the shopping experience.

Payless Shoes: Bankruptcy
On February 14, 2019, Payless filed for bankruptcy for the second time, leading to the closure of all 2,100 stores in the United States by May 2019. Additionally, on February 19, 2019, the company announced the closure of 248 stores in Canada.
However, its 790 stores across Latin America and other international locations remained unaffected by the bankruptcy proceedings.
Cheryl H. Bridges, an interim director and marketing professor at Texas A&M University, suggested that Payless failed to adapt quickly to the evolving retail landscape, resulting in its struggle to remain competitive in a rapidly changing market.

On January 16, 2020, Payless emerged from bankruptcy with plans to reintroduce its e-commerce platform in the United States. Subsequently, on August 18, 2020, the company officially rebranded by dropping ‘Shoesource’ from its name and relaunched its e-commerce website.
It also unveiled intentions to open between 300 and 500 standalone stores in North America over the course of the next five years. Expansion in the USA never happened

No Longer Sold in the USA
The story of Payless Shoes, from its simple start to its current position, shows how innovation, determination, and focusing on customers can make a big difference. Even though the brand is no longer available in the United States, it’s still changing and dealing with the challenges of retail in other countries.
