A Bite of History
Nickles Banana Flips were a unique offering in the world of snack cakes.
Unlike the chocolate or vanilla flavors that dominated the market, Banana Flips stood out with their distinct banana flavor.

Each cake featured a soft, banana-flavored sponge wrapped around a creamy, sweet banana filling.
The result was a deliciously moist and flavorful treat that satisfied cravings and brought joy to snack time.

The Secret to Their Popularity
What made Nickles Banana Flips so special? It was the perfect combination of taste and texture.
The light, airy cake paired seamlessly with the rich, creamy filling, creating a balanced and indulgent experience.
Whether enjoyed as an after-school snack, a lunchbox surprise, or a quick dessert, Banana Flips had a way of bringing smiles to faces of all ages.

The Discontinuation: A Bittersweet Farewell
Unfortunately, like many beloved products, Nickles Banana Flips were eventually discontinued.
The specific reasons behind the decision remain unclear, but it likely involved a mix of factors such as changing consumer preferences, production costs, and market demand.
As with many nostalgic foods, shifts in the industry and evolving tastes can lead to the end of even the most cherished treats.

The news of their discontinuation left many fans disheartened.
Social media platforms and forums were abuzz with fond memories and laments for the lost snack.
However, the spirit of the Banana Flip lives on through those who remember it fondly and share their love for it.

Homemade Nickles Banana Flips Recipe
Recreating the beloved Nickles Banana Flips at home can be a fun and rewarding project.
This recipe confidently captures the essence of the original treat with a soft banana-flavored cake and a luscious banana filling.
Ingredients:
For the Cake:
- 1 box banana-flavored cake mix
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup water
For the Filling:
- 1 cup mashed ripe bananas (about 2 medium bananas)
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Cake
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease and flour a 13×9-inch baking pan.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the banana-flavored cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, and water. Beat on low speed for 30 seconds, then on medium speed for 2 minutes, until the batter is smooth.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
Step 2: Prepare the Filling
- In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth and creamy.
- Add the mashed bananas and vanilla extract, and mix until well combined.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition until the filling is smooth and fluffy.
Step 3: Assemble the Banana Flips
- Once the cake is completely cool, cut it into rectangles or squares, about 3×2 inches in size, to mimic the shape of the original Banana Flips.
- Carefully slice each piece of cake horizontally to create a top and bottom layer.
- Spread a generous amount of the banana filling on the bottom layer of each piece.
- Place the top layer back on each piece, pressing gently to spread the filling to the edges.
Step 4: Serve and Enjoy
- Place the assembled Banana Flips on a serving platter.
- For an authentic touch, wrap each flip individually in plastic wrap or wax paper.
- Enjoy your homemade Nickles Banana Flips immediately, or store them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Tips:
- For an extra banana flavor, you can add a teaspoon of banana extract to the cake batter.
- Make sure the cake is completely cool before slicing and filling to prevent it from crumbling.
- If you prefer a firmer filling, refrigerate it for about 30 minutes before assembling the flips.
You can make Nickles Banana Flips at home and enjoy them just like before.
Share these tasty snacks with your family and friends to enjoy the fun and happiness they bring.

Nickles banana flips were my favorite lunch box treat when I was in grade school in the 1960’s in Pennsylvania. I would LOVE to see them make a comeback. I have tried other banana flavored snacks (Hostess banana twinkies and Little Debbie banana twins) but they just aren’t as good as the banana flip!
